Book an AppointmentA Welcoming Home for Principal Patients in Grand Rapids
Eastgate Family Dental sees many patients with Principal Dental coverage. Principal Financial Group is a common employer dental benefit, and we’re glad to welcome Principal members.
We’re not currently in-network with Principal, but we accept the plan, file every claim directly with Principal on your behalf, and have years of experience working with their billing process. Most patients find their out-of-pocket cost is comparable to what they’d pay at an in-network office once Principal’s reimbursement is applied.
What that means for you in practice: you don’t pay more upfront just because we’re out-of-network. We submit the claim, Principal pays their portion to our office, and you cover only the remaining patient responsibility. We’ll walk you through your specific benefits before you sit in the chair.

We Bill Principal Directly
We submit your claim to Principal on the day of your visit. Principal pays their portion directly to our office, so you don’t front the full cost or chase a reimbursement check.
Many Patients Have Principal
Principal is one of the more common plans we work with. Our front office knows the claim format, the typical reimbursement schedules, and the questions to ask when verifying benefits.
Transparent Pricing Up Front
For any major treatment, we provide a written pre-treatment estimate based on your specific Principal benefits. No surprises after the fact.
Family Practice for Every Generation
From a child’s first cleaning to a grandparent’s denture adjustment, we treat the whole family. Block scheduling lets you bring everyone in together.
How Principal Billing Works at Our Office
Even though we’re out-of-network with Principal, billing is straightforward and we handle the work for you:
- We verify your benefits before your visit. Call ahead with your Principal member ID and we’ll confirm what’s covered, your remaining annual maximum, deductible, and out-of-network reimbursement levels.
- We collect only your estimated patient portion at the visit. You don’t pay the full fee upfront and wait for Principal to reimburse you.
- We file the claim with Principal directly. Principal sends payment to our office, not to you.
- If there’s a small remaining balance, we send a statement. Most patients find the difference small relative to the comfort of staying with the dentist they trust.
- We follow up on any holds or denials. If Principal requests additional information, our front office handles the back-and-forth so you don’t have to.

Principal Patient FAQs
Are you in-network with Principal?
We’re not currently in-network with Principal, but we do accept the plan and bill Principal directly on your behalf. We treat many patients with Principal coverage every week, and most patients find their out-of-pocket cost is comparable to what they’d pay at an in-network office once Principal’s reimbursement is applied.
What types of Principal dental plans do you work with?
We work with most Principal Dental PPO plans, primarily those offered through small and mid-size employer benefits. If you have a Principal voluntary or individual plan, the billing process is the same. Call us with your member ID and we’ll confirm your specific coverage.
Will I pay more out of pocket because you’re out-of-network?
Sometimes a small difference, sometimes not at all. It depends on your specific Principal plan’s out-of-network reimbursement levels and our office fee for the procedure. For preventive visits, most patients pay nothing. For other procedures, we provide a written pre-treatment estimate so you can compare.
Do I have to pay the full fee upfront?
No. We file the claim directly with Principal and they pay our office, not you. At the visit, you only pay your estimated patient portion. If Principal’s payment differs slightly from our estimate, we’ll send a small statement or refund afterward.
Can you check my Principal benefits before I come in?
Yes, and we recommend it. Call us at (616) 245-9830 with your Principal member ID number (it’s on your insurance card or in the Principal member portal). We’ll contact Principal directly, confirm your coverage, and walk you through what to expect at your first visit.
Can I get a treatment estimate before I schedule?
Absolutely. For any major procedure (crowns, root canals, implants, periodontal work), we provide a written pre-treatment estimate showing the procedure cost, what Principal is expected to pay, and your portion. You’ll see real numbers before you commit to scheduling.
What if my insurance changes or I lose coverage?
If you lose your insurance coverage, you’re still welcome here. We offer the Eastgate Membership Plan, an in-house alternative to insurance with one flat annual fee that includes your preventive care plus 10% off most additional treatment. No deductibles, no waiting periods, no claim forms. Learn more about the Eastgate Membership Plan →
If your insurance simply changes to a different carrier, we also bill most major dental insurance plans directly, so you can keep coming to us. See our full list of accepted plans.
