Teeth cleaning in Grand Rapids, MI
Eastgate Family Dental
Gentle, thorough cleanings from hygienists who actually take their time.
Professional Teeth Cleaning, Done the Right Way
A professional teeth cleaning at our Grand Rapids office, sometimes called a dental prophylaxis, does what no toothbrush or floss can: it removes the hardened tartar and stubborn plaque that build up below the gumline and between teeth. A small visit that prevents much bigger ones.
At Eastgate Family Dental, our dental hygienists Laura, Maija, Christina, Kendra, Laurie, and Calvin take real pride in this work. They're the people you'll see most often, and they've built a reputation for being gentle, thorough, and never rushed. If something hurts or feels off, they'll stop and check in. If you've avoided the dentist because of a bad cleaning experience somewhere else, this is the place to come back.
Since 1961, generations of Grand Rapids families have come to 2003 Burton Street for their cleanings and the rest of their dental care.
Why a Cleaning Every Six Months Matters
Stops Cavities Before They Start
Plaque turns into tartar in as little as 24–72 hours. Once it hardens, brushing won't remove it. A professional cleaning resets the clock.
Protects Your Gums
Gum disease is the #1 reason adults lose teeth. Regular cleanings catch it early, when it's still reversible.
Saves Money Long-Term
A routine cleaning is dramatically less expensive than a filling, root canal, crown, or implant. Prevention is the cheapest dentistry there is.
Catches Problems Early
Regular visits are the most reliable way to spot cavities, cracks, infections, and early signs of oral cancer before they grow into something bigger or more expensive.
Fresher Breath, Brighter Smile
Surface stains from coffee, tea, wine, and tobacco come off during a cleaning. Your teeth look and feel cleaner immediately.
Keeps Your Whole Body Healthier
Untreated gum disease is linked to heart disease, diabetes, and stroke. Your mouth doesn't exist in isolation.
What to Expect at Your Cleaning Visit
Check In & Health Update
Arrive, get comfortable, and let us know if anything's changed since your last visit, like new medications, health concerns, or anything bothering you in your mouth.
Gum Evaluation
Your hygienist will measure the small spaces between your teeth and gums to check for early signs of gum disease.
Scaling & Polishing
Using gentle hand and ultrasonic instruments, your hygienist removes plaque and tartar from above and below the gumline, then polishes your teeth to remove surface stains.
Floss, Rinse & Fluoride
A thorough flossing, a fresh rinse, and a fluoride treatment to strengthen enamel and protect against cavities for the months ahead.
Exam & Plan
Dr. Jankowski or Dr. Kahn checks your teeth, gums, bite, and screens for oral cancer. We'll review your x-rays if any were taken and walk you through what we found.
Regular Cleaning vs. Scaling and Root Planing (Deep Cleaning)
Most patients need a regular cleaning, also called a prophylaxis. It removes plaque and tartar from healthy or mostly healthy gums and is what we recommend every six months as part of preventive care.
Patients with active gum disease need scaling and root planing, also known as a "deep cleaning." This goes below the gumline to remove tartar and bacteria from the roots of the teeth, then smooths the root surfaces so the gums can reattach. It's typically done in two visits with anesthesia and is followed by more frequent maintenance cleanings (usually every 3–4 months).
If you're not sure which one you need, your hygienist and dentist will walk you through what your gums are telling us and recommend the right path. Learn more about scaling and root planing on our periodontal treatment page.

Frequently Asked Questions About Teeth Cleaning
Every six months for most patients. Patients with active or past gum disease may benefit from cleanings every 3–4 months. Your hygienist and dentist will recommend a schedule based on your specific gum health.
A regular cleaning is not painful. You may feel some pressure or vibration, and gums that haven't been cleaned in a while can be a little tender. Our hygienists go gently and check in throughout. If anything is uncomfortable, tell us and we'll adjust.
A typical cleaning and exam visit takes about 45–60 minutes. If it's been a while since your last cleaning, plan for a little longer.
A regular cleaning (prophylaxis) is what most patients get every six months. It cleans plaque and tartar from healthy or mostly healthy gums. Scaling and root planing is a deeper treatment used when gum disease is present. It cleans below the gumline along the roots of the teeth and is usually done with anesthesia over one or two visits. Learn more on our periodontal treatment page.
Yes, we recommend a fluoride treatment every six months for both children and adults. Fluoride strengthens tooth enamel and significantly reduces your risk of cavities. Most dental insurance plans cover fluoride for children, and many cover it for adults as well, but even when it's not covered it's an inexpensive treatment with proven benefits. We include fluoride for every patient on our membership plan.
We bill most major dental insurance plans as a courtesy, including Delta Dental, BCBS, Cigna, Aetna, MetLife, Guardian, Principal, United Healthcare, Humana, and Ameritas. Cleanings are typically covered at a high percentage on most plans. Call us at (616) 245-9830 if you'd like us to verify your specific coverage.
No judgment. A lot of our patients come back after a long break and we're always glad to see them. We'll start with a thorough exam and cleaning and work with you at a pace that's comfortable. Sometimes that means more than one visit if there's a lot of buildup, and we'll explain everything before we do it.
